Preparing for the big day
The first major landmark for most research students is the ‘upgrade’ process (sometimes called ‘transfer’, ‘confirmation’ or ‘probationary review’) before being registered for a PhD. This is a valuable progress check, and can be helpful as preparation for the viva to come at the end of the doctorate.
For doctoral and masters students everywhere, the viva is a daunting challenge, often approached with anxiety and confusion rather than careful preparation. Should you relax and hope for the best, panic, or prepare systematically for the big day?
